De Mexicaanse en Amerikaanse autoriteiten hebben bijna 30 ton cannabis in beslag genomen bij een 500 meter lange smokkeltunnel tussen beide landen. Dat meldt CNN. De tunnel is 548 meter lang en verbindt het Californische Otay Mesa met het Mexicaanse Tijuana. De smokkelaars hadden de tunnel voorzien van rails, elektriciteit en een ventilatiesysteem, aldus de autoriteiten. Bij het doorzoeken van de tunnel vond de Amerikaanse douane- en immigratiedienst 25 ton cannabis in een opslagplaats. Het Mexicaanse leger trof nog 4,5 ton cannabis aan in het gebouw waar de tunnel start.

De Mexicaanse autoriteiten hebben de laatste zes maanden 105 ton marihuana in beslag genomen.

Smokkelaars gebruiken steeds vaker tunnels om drugs of illegalen van Mexico naar de VS te krijgen. Alleen al in 2009 werden zes gelijkwaardige tunnelsystemen aangetroffen en sinds de jaren negentig 125 tunnels, waarvan 75 tunnels in de laatste vier jaar.
